Environmental Compliance: REACH
The REACH Regulation is a European Community regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances. The law entered into force on 1 June 2007.
The most fundamental challenge with REACH is that it is updated every six months by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Manufacturers are then required to re-evaluate the chemicals that are used in their products and meet the reporting requirements set forth in the legislation. Most electronics manufacturers are impacted only by Article 33 of REACH, which requires them to disclose the presence of a substance if it exceeds a certain percentage weight of the product.
